Murasaki won the Grand Prize at the 33rd Fantasia Taisho with the title Ken to Maou no Cyberpunk in 2020 for his sci-fi fantasy light novel. In January 2021, Kadokawa published the third volume of Maou 2099 under the Fujimi Fantasia Bunko label, with illustrations by Kureta. The work was renamed Maou 2099 and published under the Fujimi Fantasia Bunko label.
In November 2021, Shounen Ace Plus began serializing a manga adaptation by Kiiro Akashiro, which was discontinued last June. Yutaka Sakurai launched a new manga adaptation in March 2023, with the first volume available in October.
In July 2021, Yen Press licensed the light novel in English and released the first volume. The second volume was released in June 2022.
